Beyond positive and negative

Beyond positive and negative

It’s been hectic the last couple of days getting ready for my husband’s second knee replacement surgery.

My office is also being remodeled at work and it’s nuts, simply nuts, attempting to find a folder, paper clip or envelope.  On Monday one needed to maneuver between workmen, board members, employees and wandering community members.

This morning proved no exception.  I had to drive husband into his work before returning to my work.  Needed to get checks signed by a board member during points in between.  (Except, during the commotion the previous day, forgot what time we were to meet.)

We met on the road.  She stopped her car. I stopped my car.  Didn’t know if it was really her.  She backed up.  Yes.  With awkward manuevers alongside speeding logging trucks she signed checks and we discussed other business and, within ten minutes, we sped off in separate directions.

“What craziness!” I thought, feeling my heart beating wildly.  Certainly not feeling calm and presence-filled at all.

Suddenly a moment of clarity dawned.

I saw how seeds of karma sprouted in that simple perception.  By affirming craziness one created a crazy story.  If you turned the kaleidoscope of perception slightly one could have easily created the story, “Wow!  How lucky everything worked out so easily!  It could have been so challenging if we missed one another, but look at how the Universe supported everything.”

In perfect clarity I glimpsed the way we can interpret situations “negatively” or “positively”.  I saw, once again, the way our perception shapes the dream of our life.

As this clarity dawned further in the sky of mind, awareness lifted to surround both choices of interpretation.  It now surrounded the awareness of witnessing both choices as perfectly “perfect” beyond the negative and positive judgement poles.

This eagle’s view perception flies beyond the human mind to simply encompass “what is”…both the negative and positive.  It now rested in the non-duality of the moment, simply allowing.

The positive, of course, can make our lives easier and more comfortable as humans.  The positive creates positivity in our egos, more ease in our lives.  The negative so often creates more drama, more suffering.

Yet the question that always interests me these days is:  what exists beyond the negative and positive?  What are we REALLY besides a human ego seemingly making a choice?  What are we beyond our stories of duality?  What encompasses in the smallest possible view within the widest possible view?   What transcends viewpoints altogether?

And how do we live in it, moment by moment?  When we experience dualistic perceptions of positive and negative, how do we flap our feathers and soar into that which has never been limited by either calm or craziness?

  1. “If you turned the kaleidoscope of perception slightly one could have easily created the story, “Wow! How lucky everything worked out so easily! It could have been so challenging if we missed one another, but look at how the Universe supported everything.”

A slight shift in perspective (either way) does, indeed, change the trajectory.

  2. I love this analogy: we always find what we are looking for. Perspective and labeling tell whatever story we want! It is so obviously within our ability to CHANGE THE STORY by changing perspective, abstaining from labels, allowing the moment to define and redefine itself as fits best for us.

    • Changing the story reveals so many new possibilities, Barbara. Interesting how we can shift and birth new directions just by changing our perspective.

    • It does indeed, Mary. Glad you enjoyed this. It feels sometimes like it’s been the work of a lifetime creating new stories…and then seeing what’s beyond the stories we create.

  3. “Yet the question that always interests me these days is: what exists beyond the negative and positive? What are we REALLY besides a human ego seemingly making a choice? Indeed, and….
What is prior to duality and nonduality?
Does consciousness allow us to recognize IT?
Is it possible that there is something prior to consciousness that somehow consciousness senses or intuits?
    What wants to know?
And if so could we control the recognition?

    😀

    • My goodness! You’ve spun the questions out even further, Ben! I was just reading in a book this past week how the very act of questioning places us in that not-knowing energy. How questioning itself puts us exactly where we want to be–unless we think there’s a concrete answer, that is. Can we stay in the questions, or do we think we know? Who wants to know or control? (And I have noticed lately how sometimes these questions open into that space of total acceptance of not-knowing and sometimes they irritate the hell out of this mind. May have to write a blog about that some day, too.)

  4. Oh, now, Ben. Everything was making so much sense until you roped and cinched my intellect into a big gnarly knot. Darn it!

What is prior? What wants to know?
    Untangle this one, gang.

  5. I’ve been pondering perception a lot lately, too. I’ve been tackling it mostly from in between people (my story vs your story), but how wonderful to view perception as my story vs my *other* story. Thanks for the twist, Kathy! 🙂

    • Glad you appreciated it, Dana. It’s like an over-layer of perception, as we realize it’s all “our” story. You are welcome. It seems I love to twist. 🙂
